OBEAGU UGWUAJI, Enugu State — Prominent leaders and stakeholders of the Obeagu Ugwuaji community in Enugu South Local Government Area have rallied in defense of their traditional ruler, Igwe Christopher Ikenga, dismissing allegations of land grabbing and financial impropriety as “falsehoods” aimed at undermining ongoing accountability measures in the town.

The leaders, speaking during a counter-briefing on Tuesday, were responding to a protest led by a faction of the community under the former President General of the Town Union, Obi Chukwunoso Freedom, who accused the monarch of mismanaging communal resources and presiding over questionable land allocations.

Stakeholders Reject Allegations:

Leading the defense, Engineer Aloy Obodo, a former Director of Engineering at the Federal Ministry of Works and ex-Enugu State commissioner, described the accusations against the monarch as a “rehash of discredited claims” intended to divert attention from alleged irregularities during the tenure of the immediate past Town Union leadership.

Obodo traced the roots of the crisis to the management of a community-driven project — a 30-room service apartment conceived as a sustainable revenue source to reduce dependence on land sales.

According to him, the project became embroiled in alleged financial mismanagement under the leadership of the former President General, whom he accused of operating without accountability.

He alleged that despite significant financial inflows, the multi-million naira project remains incomplete after four years, adding that only a fraction of allocated funds reached the site.

“For every ₦40 million meant for the project, less than ₦5 million was utilized appropriately,” Obodo claimed, noting that the situation triggered multiple petitions from concerned residents.

Financial Claims and Assembly Intervention:

Addressing allegations that the monarch diverted ₦400 million, Obodo stated that the claim had previously been dismissed at the Enugu State House of Assembly due to lack of evidence. He added that the accusers were compelled to issue a public apology to the traditional ruler.

He emphasized that the monarch is not a sole signatory to any community account, thereby questioning the basis of the financial allegations.

Caretaker Committee Raises Concerns:

Corroborating the elders’ position, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Ani Joseph, alleged that resistance to a pending financial audit had fueled tensions in the community.

Joseph claimed that attempts to scrutinize the past administration’s records had been repeatedly disrupted, alleging that some youths were mobilized to obstruct general meetings.

He further alleged that the crisis intensified following the committee’s refusal to approve what he described as an unauthorized allocation of 100 plots of community land to a former Enugu State governor.

According to him, the decision triggered friction with the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters, raising concerns about possible interference in the community’s internal affairs.

Allegations of Youth Militarization:

The Caretaker Chairman also raised alarm over what he termed the “militarization” of local youths, alleging that a significant number had been drawn into cult-related activities during the previous administration.

He said the development had created a climate of fear, forcing some elders and officials to temporarily leave the community.

Financial Records Disputed:

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Francis Ikechukwu Egbo, challenged the former President General to explain the source of his alleged wealth, claiming that he developed multiple properties within his four-year tenure without a verifiable income base.

Egbo further disputed the ₦400 million allegation, presenting what he described as financial records from the community’s Union Bank account. According to him, the records indicate that ₦226 million was generated over a ten-year period, while over ₦260 million was reportedly expended during the former administration’s tenure.

Demolition Controversy:

On recent demolitions at the New Enugu City site, Egbo stated that both the traditional institution and the caretaker leadership were victims of the incident, alleging that the action was manipulated to implicate the monarch.

He also claimed that the former President General had failed to honour invitations from security agencies, including the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, while the monarch had consistently cooperated with authorities.

Legal Dispute Over Leadership:

The stakeholders maintained that a court order remains in effect restraining the former President General from parading himself as the community leader pending the resolution of ongoing legal proceedings.

They further alleged that some individuals linked to the previous leadership have continued to interfere in community affairs, including alleged unauthorized levies on developers.

Protesters Demand Accountability:

Meanwhile, the protest led by Obi Chukwunoso Freedom drew participation from a cross-section of residents, including women and youth groups, who expressed concerns over governance and transparency.

The protesters alleged irregularities in land allocation processes and called for an independent audit of community finances and land ownership structures.

Freedom said a review of financial records had raised questions about the utilization of funds, noting that “significant figures” were recorded without corresponding development outcomes.

He also referenced recent arrests involving some community members, which he said had heightened tensions, although these claims remain unverified.

Monarch Denies Allegations:

In his response, Igwe Ikenga denied all allegations of wrongdoing, accusing the former President General of attempting to evade accountability and perpetuate his influence within the Town Union structure.

He alleged that the ongoing dispute was linked to efforts to scrutinize past land transactions and administrative decisions.

Call for Government Intervention:

The stakeholders have appealed to Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, to intervene in the matter, urging the state government to ensure adherence to the rule of law and respect for existing court orders.

They also called on the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Charles Egumgbe, to refrain from actions that could undermine judicial processes.

Community Seeks Resolution:

Despite the tensions, residents say the community remains calm, with many expressing hope for dialogue and a peaceful resolution.

Observers note that the dispute underscores broader concerns around land administration, transparency, and governance within community structures.

As the situation unfolds, attention is now focused on the Enugu State Government’s response and the outcome of ongoing legal and administrative processes aimed at restoring stability in Obeagu Ugwuaji.
