TETfund intervenes as FUAHSE opens door for healthcare workforce training
President is using FUAHSE to address Nigeria's challenges in the healthcare manpower development and brain drain.
The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, FUAHSE, Prof. John Emaimo, has announced the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETfund, in the University.
Emaimo further revealed that the institution has opened its doors to the public for the first time since its establishment in 2023, unveiling its facilities and outlining plans to address Nigeria’s critical healthcare workforce gap.
Speaking during a press briefing and facility tour on Friday, the Vice Chancellor stated that TETfund is already helping the university in critical infrastructure such in the laboratories equipment, hostels and other infrastructure.
He appreciated President Bola Tinubu's establishment of the University, noting that the President is using the institution to address Nigeria's challenges in the healthcare manpower development and brain drain.
Prof. John Emaimo described the university as “a testament to transformation, resilience, and forward-thinking leadership,” tracing its journey from a modest diploma-awarding Dental College to a full-fledged specialized university.
The transition, he said, was made possible by a presidential directive and approval for conversion, reflecting a national commitment to strengthen healthcare education and service delivery.
"FUAHSE is now positioned as Nigeria’s dedicated institution for allied health sciences, with a focus on producing graduates who are both academically sound and practically equipped for the evolving demands of the health sector," Emaimo said.
The National Universities Commission had approved 16 core academic programmes in clinical sciences, basic medical sciences, public health, allied sciences, engineering, and technology; including Nursing Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Dental Technology, Physiotherapy, Public Health, and Biomedical Engineering.
In addition, the university has secured approval for 11 new degree programmes in emerging fields such as Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, and Software Engineering — courses designed to place graduates at the intersection of healthcare and innovation.
“Our strength lies not only in the breadth of our programmes but in the depth of our training. At FUAHSE, we emphasize practical, hands-on learning to ensure graduates transition seamlessly from the classroom to real-world healthcare settings," Emaimo said.
He further revealed that to support the vision, the university is investing in infrastructure, including a 1,000-seat auditorium, a modern library, and an advanced ICT block.
Emaimo acknowledged funding and infrastructure constraints typical of a new institution but said the management’s resolved to build a world-class university remains firm.
He noted that FUAHSE’s mission aligns with the federal government’s agenda to rapidly expand the healthcare workforce and improve service delivery nationwide.
The press tour also served as a pre-matriculation activity, with the university set to ceremonially admit its second set of freshmen on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
“We appreciate your presence and your role in amplifying our vision to the world,” Emaimo told journalists. “Together, we can shape a healthier future for Nigeria.”
