Tension as ADC Insists, Finds Venue for National Convention in Abuja Tuesday
DAILY INSIDER was informed that a venue has been located at RAINBOW EVENT CENTER, Garki, Area 10. Abuja.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) will hold its national convention in Abuja on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, amid leadership disputes, venue challenges, and a standoff with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The convention is the culmination of a week of congresses that began with polling unit and ward congresses on April 7, followed by local government congresses on April 9 and state congresses on April 11.
According to National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the convention _“is not an elective convention” and “will not produce new officers or candidates.” Instead, it is designed to “ratify decisions previously taken by NEC and the NWC since the last convention cycle.”
Venue crisis, INEC dispute
The party is scrambling for a venue after Transcorp Hilton Abuja canceled its booking days before the gathering. The ADC Vanguard, the party’s mobilisation arm, confirmed the hotel withdrew its hosting arrangement but said officials are working to finalize an alternative location.
DAILY INSIDER was however informed that a venue has been located at RAINBOW EVENT CENTER, Garki, Area 10. Abuja.
The convention is proceeding despite warnings from INEC amid an escalating leadership crisis. The ADC has insisted it will continue with its congresses and convention, saying it duly notified INEC by letters dated February 27, 2026, and March 28, 2026. The party argues INEC’s monitoring is not a mandatory requirement for valid party gatherings.
Political undercurrents
The ADC has accused the President Bola Tinubu government of denying access to Eagle Square and other Abuja venues to frustrate the convention. The Presidency denied the allegation, with spokesman Sunday Dare maintaining there is “no plan to sideline opposition parties."
The situation escalated last week when opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rauf Aregbesola protested at INEC headquarters in Abuja, accusing the federal government of attempting to weaken opposition parties.
What’s at stake
The convention is expected to elect or reaffirm key national officers, solidify internal structures, and serve as a rallying point for opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who have aligned with the ADC platform.
The party released an updated convention committee list on Sunday, with Sen. Liyel Imoke as Chairman and Sen. Aminu Tambuwal as Deputy Chairman.
Despite the mounting challenges, ADC leaders insist the national convention will proceed as scheduled, setting the stage for a potential political showdown.
