High stake intrigues ended up in favour of Dr Benjamin Obi Nwoye, who emerged Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the just concluded electoral national convention of the Party.

The transition took place during the party’s National Convention at Eagles Square, Friday.

Insider sources revealed that external forces had mounted pressure to tilt the consensus decision in the direction of Chief Emma Eneukwu the occupant of the position but for deft political moves of Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

The earlier South East Zonal Congress of the party in Enugu on Wednesday witnessed considerable pressure mounted for the consensus to be reached in Enugu for the National Working Committee positions zoned to South East ahead of the national convention, but it ended in a stalemate.

The South East leaders only ended up taking positions on the Zonal executive positions which saw the emergence of Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu as National Vice Chairman, South East for the second term, as well as others who also retained their positions.

Only few positions were changed including the position of Zonal Women Leader, where Dr. Oby Aji replaced Mimi Diyioke, both from Enugu State.

With regard to the NWC positions, the horse trading moved to Abuja where it was learnt that the last minute intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu provided clarity and cleared the way for the likes of Dr. Ben Nwoye to waltz through and embrace victory.

Those familiar with developments behind the scene revealed that President Tinubu had directed that state governors should have the right of first refusal to nominate consensus candidates to fill positions zoned to their states as leaders of the party in the respective states.

That decision sealed the fate of Chief Eneukwu and paved the way for the emergence of Dr. Ben Nwoye as the new Deputy National Chairman (South), as Gov Mbah had his undiluted choice in the person of Nwoye.

Until the late-night decision, Chief Eneukwu had served as the Deputy National Chairman for the region.

However, the emergence of Nwoye – a move solidified by a consensus arrangement – indicates the party’s intent to recalibrate its mobilization strategy ahead of future electoral cycles.

Dr Nwoye, a legal professional and the immediate past Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, entered the race with a clear mandate for modernization.

He had earlier been screened alongside Mr Eneukwu to contest for the office.

In his address to the delegates, Nwoye emphasized that his tenure would focus on strengthening internal party democracy and ensuring that the party’s foundation remains rooted in its members rather than its elite.

He specifically advocated for the creation of a “Women and Youth Empowerment Desk,” an initiative designed to provide direct support and a stronger voice to grassroots members who have traditionally felt sidelined.

“The APC must continue to be broad enough to accommodate diversity and disciplined enough to protect its values,” Nwoye noted during the lead-up to the election.
