Thugs Disrupt PDP Convention, Assault Journalists as Jonathan is Named Candidate
The disruption followed a tense morning that saw the venue change twice
A planned convention by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party ended in chaos on Saturday after suspected political thugs stormed the venue, assaulted journalists and party members, and disrupted proceedings.
The violence occurred at the A-Class Event Centre in Wuse 2, Abuja, where the PDP Interim National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki had initially scheduled a “special convention” to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.
The disruption followed a tense morning that saw the venue change twice. The Federal Capital Territory Administration had earlier directed event centres to deal only with PDP leadership recognised by INEC. Police also blocked roads leading to A-Class Park and Event Centre.
Party officials said the convention was moved to a private residence in Area 10, where Prof. Jerry Gana received a Certificate of Return on behalf of Jonathan. Delegates and leaders later returned to the A-Class Event Centre for further ceremonies.
That is when the attack occurred. Witnesses said thugs armed with sticks and other weapons invaded the hall, harassed participants, beat journalists and party members, and stole mobile phones and other valuables. Panic forced the programme to a halt as attendees fled for safety.
The Turaki-led faction had earlier accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of threatening to shut down the venue, and insisted the convention would proceed despite intimidation.
Saturday’s incident adds to the deepening crisis within the PDP as rival factions jostle over leadership and the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
