Beyond The Ballot: Prof Nnamchi Charges Nigerians To Constantly Engage Government
...Says democracy cannot survive on voting alone; interrogation on governance must be continuous
The Member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, in the House of Representatives, Hon. Prof. Paul Sunday Nnamchi, has called on Nigerians to deepen democracy by remaining active in governance long after elections are over.
Speaking during a live interview on Nigerian Television Authority, (NTA) programme, “Citizens Must Engage Beyond Elections to Strengthen Democracy”, to mark the International Day for Parliamentarism,” the lawmaker said Nigeria’s democracy would only mature when citizens see themselves as participants, not spectators.
Prof. Nnamchi stated stressed the need for citizens’ continuous participation beyond elections which he described as the start line, and not the finish line. “Citizens must remain involved through dialogue, oversight, and demands for accountability between elections. A democracy of spectators becomes a democracy of spectacle, not service.” He noted.
On the balance between representation and participation, he added: “Representation without participation becomes hollow. When citizens disappear after voting, institutions grow distant and accountability weakens. But participation without effective representation becomes noise. We need both working together.”
Commenting on voter education and 2027 preparations, the Federal lawmaker urged especially young Nigerians to move from protest to policy engagement: “Register, get your permanent vote’s card, (PVC,) but also ask questions. Attend town halls. Read bills. Track budgets. Democracy is a daily practice, not a seasonal event.”
He emphasized that elected leaders, must listen, explain, consult, and deliberate, adding that, “winning an election is only the beginning of representation, not its fulfilment. The mandate is a covenant to serve.”
Prof. Nnamchi also reaffirmed commitment to his philosophy of the “People First – Let’s Do It Better,” saying, “every bill, motion, and constituency intervention he undertakes is guided by the need to make government work for the ordinary citizen.”
