Enugu Govt Slams ₦500,000 Fine on One-Way Drivers, Orders Psychiatric Test for Offenders
Vehicles will continue to be impounded until drivers obey traffic rules, Ozor warned
The Enugu State Government has begun enforcing a ₦500,000 fine on motorists caught driving against traffic, with offenders also required to undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Transport Commissioner Obi Ozor announced the strict measure on Wednesday in Enugu, saying it’s part of efforts to reduce road accidents and enforce discipline on state roads.
He said the government has invested billions in road infrastructure, including dual carriageways and medians, yet reckless one-way driving persists — particularly in areas like Abakpa and Penoks, despite clear lane markings.
“Government has spent billions to provide adequate road infrastructure, yet people deliberately drive against traffic, endangering their lives and those of others,” Ozor said.
The commissioner expressed concern over rising fatalities linked to the violation, noting that “every day, we record accidents and carry bodies from roads that are in good condition. This is unacceptable.”
Under the new policy, offenders will not only pay the fine but will also be assessed for possible substance abuse or mental health issues. Those found needing help will be referred for rehabilitation before their impounded vehicles are released.
Ozor stressed that the policy isn’t about revenue but safety. “One minute will not kill you. Waiting at traffic lights or taking the proper route will save your life and that of others,” he said.
To drive compliance, the government has launched public enlightenment campaigns with transport unions and the media, and recently met with taxi, tricycle, bus, tanker, and tipper operators.
Vehicles will continue to be impounded until drivers obey traffic rules, Ozor warned, adding that the government remains committed to cutting avoidable road deaths across Enugu.
