There's been a huge outcry over a disturbing incident in Ozoro, Delta State, where women and girls were allegedly raped, molested, and assaulted during a festival. The incident, which has been dubbed the "rape festival," has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for justice and accountability.

Videos circulating on social media show women being stripped, groped, and assaulted by groups of men, with some warning that any woman found outside during the festival would be targeted. The Delta State government has condemned the incident, describing it as "barbaric" and "unacceptable," and the police have launched an investigation, arresting several suspects, including a community leader.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and rights of women and girls in the region, with many organizations and individuals calling for urgent action to address gender-based violence and protect women's rights.

NDDA seek reforms on violence against women, girls

Consequently, The Niger Delta Development Agenda (NDDA) has strongly condemned the attack, describing the incident as heinous and calling for immediate reforms and collective action to end gender-based violence (GBV) in the region.

In a statement signed by NDDA Convener Mr Iteveh Nurudeen Ekpokpobe and issued in Uyo, the group expressed deep shock and outrage over the assault, while extending solidarity and support to the victims and their families.

The organisation noted that the incident occurred shortly after International Women’s Day, underscoring the persistent gap between global commitments to women’s rights and the harsh realities on the ground.

“The vulnerability of women and girls in our society is a pressing concern,” the statement read. “Such violent acts highlight the need for urgent action to protect women’s rights and safety.”

NDDA emphasised the urgent need for regional and state-level collaboration to combat GBV, including stronger support systems for survivors, policy reforms, and enforcement measures.

The call to action comes amid ongoing concerns about the safety and rights of women and girls in the Niger Delta, with NDDA urging stakeholders to prioritise accountability, prevention, and survivor support to address this persistent human rights issue.
