Oyo Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Today Over Abduction of Colleagues, Pupils
The directive was issued by the NUT Oyo State leadership to press for urgent government action to secure the release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike from Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils.
The directive was issued by the NUT Oyo State leadership to press for urgent government action to secure the release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
In a joint statement signed by state Chairman Hassan Fatai and Secretary Salami Olukayode, the union said the prolonged captivity has caused fear and anxiety among teachers, disrupted confidence in the school system, and discouraged parents from sending children to school. It said tension has risen in affected communities.
The union said the strike is intended to compel authorities to intensify efforts for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
NUT urged teachers to comply fully with the directive, remain law-abiding, and stay away from classrooms for the duration of the action while ensuring their safety.
The union also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, saying it would continue engagement with relevant authorities until the abductees are rescued.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and security of teachers and learners nationwide, stressing that protection of school communities remains a top priority.
