Rep Nnamchi Urges Investment in Boy Child on International Day Observance
He cited academic pressure, mental health struggles, societal expectations around masculinity, exposure to violence, and the risk of dropping out of school as key issues affecting boys’ development.
Hon. Professor Paul Sunday Nnamchi, member representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency in the 10th National Assembly, has called for greater attention to the welfare and development of the boy child, saying that neglect risks producing a disengaged and vulnerable generation.
In a statement to mark the International Day of the Boy Child, Nnamchi said that conversations on child welfare have for too long overlooked the specific challenges facing boys.
He cited academic pressure, mental health struggles, societal expectations around masculinity, exposure to violence, and the risk of dropping out of school as key issues affecting boys’ development.
“If we neglect these realities, we risk raising a generation that is disengaged, vulnerable, and unable to contribute meaningfully to our constituency and society in general,” he said.
Nnamchi urged parents, educators, policymakers, traditional and religious leaders, and civil society to create safe spaces where boys can express themselves, access quality education, learn positive values, and develop into responsible adults.
He said he remained committed in the National Assembly to supporting motions and legislation that protect boys from abuse and exploitation, promote their right to education, support mental and emotional well-being, and equip them with skills for the future of work.
“An empowered boy child grows into an empowered man, a responsible father, and a nation-builder,” he stated.
The lawmaker called on stakeholders to move beyond rhetoric and actively mentor, guide, and listen to boys, while challenging harmful stereotypes that discourage emotional expression. He added that investment in boys should match investment in girls to ensure gender equity.
Addressing the boys directly, Nnamchi said: “Your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your future is worth fighting for.”
